My Notes for Feast PICC, January 25, 2015

I. The Mass

The mass yesterday was led by Father Erick Santos who is a funny priest. He never fails to make people laugh every time that he gives the homily.

Father Erick Santos

The first reading is Jonah 3:1-5, 10 and the second reading is 1 Corinthians 7:29-31. The message of the homily as I have perceived it is a reminder that we have to dedicate our lives to God. He must be the center of all aspects of our lives. In Jonah 3:1-5, 10 , God sent the prophet to warn the people of Nineveh to follow God or else God will destroy them. Good thing that they listened and so received God's mercy and forgiveness. In 1 Corinthians 7:29-31, the message tells us that this world is temporary and our life is short. It reminds us that we must not be too attached to temporary things that this world can offer. As I understand it, it is like telling us that we are just borrowing whatever possession we currently have, may it be material or people.

I was also able to catch from the homily that God needs prophets like Jonah and His disciples. This is because He needs someone to relay His message to people. Especially to people who have forgotten Him. Our Pope is an example of prophet in our time according to Father Erick. Father Erick also said that an ordinary person can also be a prophet in his/her little way if he/she can remind his/her fellowman.

II. Bold Series Talk 3: Partner

PICC Plenary Hall with Feast attendees

Yesterday is the third part of the "Bold Series: Dare to Ask God for the Impossible". The preachers explained yesterday the reason why we pray together when we are asking something bold from God.

A. Brother George Gabriel

Brother George gave an analogy of how powerful the prayer of more than one person is. He said that our faith when we pray is like a window. When we are praying along with another person, the opening of that window becomes bigger and so the more we become open to receive the answer of God.

B. Brother Dreus Costco

Brother Dreus explained why we can pray for our fellowman. He said that each of us is like the organs of the body. A person's prayer for fellowman is powerful because we are all connected. Each person breathes the same breathe of life that comes from God's own breathe (Gen 2:7). Since we share the same breathe of life, we can pray for others.

C. Brother Bo Sanchez

Brother Bo explained why we need to pray for others. He said that when we pray for other people, we grow in faith and in love. He said that prayer is love. Love is the greatest force or power in the universe.

He explained that prayer does not change the mind of God but instead our minds. God is generous and it is not true that the prayer of one person is less powerful than the prayer of two or more. What the intercession does is it increases the receptivity of the receiver.

He said that he cannot give a logical reason about the power of intercession. However, he gave a testimony to share how intercession has been working on his life.

He said that when the Light of Jesus was born, Intercession Ministry was founded by his mother and the group prayed for him. This ministry goes on in the tradition of the Feast until now and that is one of the reasons why Light of Jesus family has been blessed. He also shared that there is a second group of people praying for him. His parents brought him to a convent in Cebu when he was a baby and the group of nuns there has been praying for him ever since. Brother Bo also said that the third battalion of prayer intercessors in his life are Mama Mary, St. Francis, St Benedict and St. Ignacious of Loyola. He said that other Catholics may not believe in the intercessions of Saints but that is fine. The last group of his intercessors are his parents. Brother Bo's parents are no longer in this earth but he said that he knows that they are still praying for him.

III. My Say

It was another blessed Sunday. I can relate to the message of the homily and the talk. It made me think that I am  fortunate because I am still alive. Again, life is short and it is in the hands of God. The homily strengthened my decision to pursue my passion. I do not want to pass this earth not being able to do the things that I truly desire. The talk about praying with partners reminded me to pray for people around me. It also strengthened my belief in the power of intercession.
